A convenient standard zoom lens with high quality optics, a high zoom ratio and good cost performance for use with the Nikon DX Format Digital SLRs. With an ample 18-70mm zoom range that is equivalent to a 27-105mm lens in 35mm format, this lens offers maximum versatility to accommodate tight portraits or expansive landscapes. Optical performance is augmented through the incorporation of 3 ED glass elements and 1 composite aspherical lens that together provide appropriate compensation for aberrations. Through the adoption of an SWM (Silent Wave Motor), the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED enables swift, silent AF (Auto Focus) performance with the AF systems of the Nikon Digital SLR's.

Excellent standard zoom lens. Sharp results and very quick to focus. When attached to the D200 and D300 it produces professional results at a fraction of the weight of the F2.8 pro lenses.

I have mixed feelings about this lens!
The good: zoom range is about the best in its class; AF-S focusing is swift & very quiet; generally low levels of chromatic aberration; resolution generally good.
The not so good: contrast on the low side; softness in corners; distortion at 18mm is significant; vignetting at 18mm f3.5 can require correction in software.
Summary: Ive considered replacing this with the Tamrom 17-50mm f2.8, but would miss that bit extra at the long end along with the AF-S focusing. The only place to go from here is either the 17-55mm f2.8 Nikkor or, as I am doing, replacing it with the 18-200 VR Nikkor lens.
